Peace process needs patient support and involvement of the Filipino people–Slattum

Royal Norwegian Government Special Envoy to the Philippine Peace Process Elisabeth Slattum encouraged the Filipino people’s support and involvement to the peace process.

In her remarks at the opening ceremony of the third round of talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines in Rome, Italy yesterday, the Third Party Facilitator also asked both parties to have courage to both come out as winners in the negotiations.

Norway to stand by Filipinos in the peace process–Ambassador

Royal Norwegian Ambassador to the Philippines Erik Forner delivered the first remarks at the opening ceremonies of the third round of formal peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

Forner said his government is committed to facilitating the peace process between both parties.

He also said that the Philippine and Norways is celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relationship this year. Read more

Gabriela presents women’s peace agenda to GRP and NDFP

Members of Gabriela-Rome, in behalf of all its chapters in the Philippines and other parts of the world, presented to representatives of the negotiating panels of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines the Women’s Agenda for a Just and Lasting Peace.

The brief ceremony was held immediately before the opening ceremonies of the third round of formal peace negotiations between the parties.

Former Gabriela Representatives Luz Ilagan and Liza Masa as well as Atty Angela Trinidad represented the GRP while NDFP Panel member Coni Ledesma ang NDFP consultants Wilma Tiamzon and Concha Araneta Bocala represented the NDFP.

People’s orgs press for release of political prisoners via general amnesty

Members of peasant organizations, rights advocates and Church-based organizations today held a rally at Mendiola to call on the Duterte government to immediately release the 392 political prisoners through general amnesty. The rally came a day before the resumption of the 3rd round of formal talks between the GPH and NDFP. Read more

NDFP peace negotiators pay tribute to NPA’s Pulang Bagani Battalion

NDFP peace negotiators were honored by the New People’s Army’s Pulang Bagani Battalion with a special military parade and review at the conclusion of their national peace forum in Davao City’s Paquibato District last December 26.

NDFP negotiating panel member Coni Ledesma, senior adviser Luis Jalandoni, consultants Concha Araneta Bocala and Porferio Tuna expressed delight at the presence of women commanders and fighters among the ranks of the NPA’s biggest standing unit. Read more

Pulang Bagani Battalion leads celebration of CPP’s 48th anniversary

The New People’s Army’s Pulang Bagani Battalion staged a military parade and review to start the Communist Party of the Philippines’ 48th founding anniversary celebration in Davao City last December 26.

Often dismissed as a spent force, especially after the death of one of its legendary commanders Leoncio “Ka Parago” Pitao, the battalion welcomed tens of thousands of supporters and well-wishers in a show of force at President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown.

The CPP said it is at its strongest in its 48-year history and is ready to continue its revolution until final victory.

The GRP-NDFP peace negotiations is currently imperiled by the Marcos rehabilitation by Pres. Duterte, stalled release of political prisoners, continuing militarization of communities under the US-designed Oplan Bayanihan, and the recent appointment of Lt. Gen. Eduardo Año as the new chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) — worrisome issues for human rights raised at the rally. Read more

Activists condemn human rights violations under Duterte

Thousands of activists slammed continuing human rights violations under the Rodrigo Duterte administration in rallies on International HUman Rights Day last Friday.

In Manila, the main rally led by Karapatan said Duterte is not serious in giving justice to victims of rights violations.

Instead, the activists said Duterte buried the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos as a hero and led the so-called war on drugs that have killed an average of 1,000 every month in his more than five months as president.

Lawyers present six reasons why political prisoners must be freed

People’s lawyers held a press conference at Mendiola this morning and cited six reasons for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) and the Public Interest Law Center (PILC) joined human rights victims and their kin in solidarity fasting and stressed the legal and humanitarian grounds for the release.

President Rodrigo Duterte had recently issued statements he would only release the political prisoners after a bilateral ceasefire agreement with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

The lawyers said Duterte is contradicting himself, saying it was him who promised to grant them general amnesty immediately after his election as President earlier this year. (Featured photo by Salinlahi)
