Philippine National Artist pays tribute to Fidel Castro

Philippine National Artist Bienvenido “Bien” Lumbera pays tribute to Fidel Castro as a great anti-imperialist and socialist leader at the offering of candles and flowers in Quezon City on the eve of Castro’s interment.

Rita Baua of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) led the ceremonies attended by progressive leaders from the working class, health and education sectors. Read more

Filipino leaders pay tribute to Cuba’s Fidel Castro

Filipino activists signed a Book of Condolence as tribute to the late Cuban revolutionary and long-time president Fidel Castro in a special event at the University of the Philippines last December 1.

Louis Jalandoni of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), other peace consultants and progressive leaders led the special program, also participated in by Venezuelan Ambassador Capaya Rodriguez Gonzalez.

It was organized by the Philippines-Cuba Friendship Association (Amistad), the Philippines Chapter of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS-Phils), the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), the All U.P. Academic Employees Union and the Center for International Studies of the University of the Philippines.

Regarded as an exemplary socialist and revolutionary by the Philippine Left, Castro succumbed due to old age last week.

Zumel and other genuine heroes memorialized at the Bantayog

Revolutionary journalist Antonio Zumel was honored with 18 other heroes and martyrs at the latest roll of the the Bantayog ng mga Bayani’s Wall of Remembrance on November 30, 2016.

Former senator, rights advocate and Bantayog’s Board of Trustees Chairperson Wigberto “Bobby” Tanada presented the citations of the event, held during Andres Bonifacio’s 153’s birth anniversary.

Workers call for immediate end to contractualization on Bonifacio Day

Thousands of militant laborers commemorate Andres Bonifacio’s 153rd birth anniversary with a rally to demand from the Rodrigo Duterte government the immediate end to contractualization.

The workers reminded Duterte of his campaign promise to end the practice.

Five months into the Duterte presidency, contractual workers have yet to be regularized through executive action.

They also condemned the burial of the late dictator at the Libingan ng mga Bayani who they said, unlike Bonifacio, was not a real hero. Read more

Lakbayan ng Visayas decries militarization and continuing lack of rehabilitation

Survivors of suptertyphoon Yolanda from Eastern Visayas traveled to Manila to decry the lack of genuine rehabilitation three years after the disaster.

Participants of the Lakbayan ng Visayas said they came to remind President Rodrigo Duterte of his campaign promise to help the survivors, which seems to have been forgotten.

Instead, they now suffer militarization as Armed Forces of the Philippines units are being deployed in their communities, the protesters said. Read more

Progressives lead ‘Black Friday’ anti-Marcos rally

Progressive organizations came out in force to lead the Black Friday protest at the Quirino Grandstand last November 25.

Led by the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacanang (CARMMA), the rally steadily grew until tens of thousands eventually flocked to the venue participated by students and private and government office workers.

Protesting the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos with full military honors at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, the rally was the biggest protest action so far against a Rodrigo Duterte decision in his five-month presidency. Read more

Old and young meet at Black Friday anti-Marcos protest

“Millennials” and “Gen Z post-millennials” meet up with martial law veterans in an anti-Marcos march and rally at the Rizal Park on “Black Friday,” November 25, 2016.

Among the speakers who expressed elation at the huge turnout from the youth and student sector were Bonifacio Ilagan, Wigberto Tanada, Sr. Mary John Mananza, Edita Burgos, and Satur Ocampo.

Tens of thousands participated in the Quirino Grandstand protest excluding 34 other protest actions across the country, according to Bagong Alyansang Makabayan which led the activities along with the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacanang. Read more

Black Friday: A fiesta of furious and funny placards

Thousands of youth and students who grew up with Twitter, Facebook and Instagram stamped their mark on the Black Friday protest at Rizal Park with both enraged and funny placards that became one of the focal points of the event.

Tirelessly holding the placards aloft, the young protesters tried to outdo each other with the funniest and angriest quips they hoped would be read aloud by the emcees during the program.

The placards did not spare President Rodrigo Duterte, calling him the Marcoses’ puppet for ordering a hero’s burial for the late dictator.
