Journalists and victims’ kin decry impunity 7 years after Ampatuan massacre

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippine and the families of victims of the Ampatuan Massacre trooped to Mendiola last November 23 to demand justice for the mass murder of 58 civilians including 32 journalists in 2009.

The NUJP demanded a stop to the culture of impunity as it noted that journalists are still being harassed and attacked under the Rodrigo Duterte government.

The NUJP also condemened the slow prosecution of the Ampatuan family and their cohorts in what is known as the worst election related crime in Philppine history and the worst singular attack against journalists throughout the world. Read more

Students and teachers slam hero’s burial for dictator Marcos

Thousands of students from the University of the Philippines, Ateneo and Miriam College held a protest rally along Katipunan Ave. in Quezon City the day that Ferdinand Marcos was buried and given military honors at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The students were joined by their professors and school administrators.

Motorists also blew their car horns in support of the protest.

Activists vow to continue fight against the Marcoses

In a forum at the College of Law of the University of the Philippines-Diliman a day after the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was sneakily buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, activists vow to fight efforts to what they say are obvious moves to revive “Marcosian ideology.”

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacanang (CARMMA) also announced a giant anti-Marcos rally on November 25, Friday, with the following themes: “National Day of Unity and Rage against the Marcos Burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani,” “National Day of Unity and Rage against the Revision of History” and “National Day of Unity and Rage against Duterte’s Alliance with the Marcoses.” Read more

Thousands march and protest vs Marcos burial

Martial Law victims and students from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, UP Integrated School, Miriam College and Ateneo de Manila University joined forces and held protest actions a few hours after the late President Ferdinand Marcos was buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani last November 18.

Enraged by the sneaky manner in which the Marcos family interned the dictator, the rally along Katipunan Avenue was the biggest in years that the three schools staged.

Martial Law victims decry surreptitious Marcos burial at LNMB

While former President Ferdinand Marcos was being buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, Martial Law victims massed up at the Philcoa in Quezon City to protest what they called a surreptitious internment last November 18.

The protesters said the burial was in keeping with the nature of the Marcos dictatorship which they claim may be contemptuous of the law as it the move did not event allow the petitioners against the burial the chance to file their motion for reconsideration.

The LNMB was kept secret by the Marcos family even from their supporters to keep it “private and solemn.” Read more

Survivors reenact Luisita massacre on 12th anniversary

Survivors reenact the Hacienda Luisita massacre at the culmination of the three-day Cultural Caravan for Land, Justice in Peace commemorating the 12th anniversary of the carnage last November 15.

They also recounted the violent dispersal that killed seven strikers and injured scores of others.

Consumers ask Supreme Court to nullify Meralco ‘sweetheart’ deals

Consumer group Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas with its counsel Neri Colmenares filed a petition at the Supreme Court against the government’s Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) awarding of 20-year power contracts to seven private generation companies without bidding, among them are those owned by Meralco.

The petition was filed on November 8, 2016.

NAPC leads anti-poverty mapping conference

National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) lead convenor Liza Maza and consultant James Miraflor present the database launch of Tala ng Bayan laban sa Kahirapan (Talambayan), a multidimensional approach to assess and map poverty in the country. Miraflor noted that “where there is development like urbanization, pockets of poverty also arise.”

The event is the first such consultation organized by NAPC under Maza that culminated in the launch of the anti-poverty movement called Talambayan.

It was held at the B Hotel in Quezon City last November 10-11.

Condemnation of the Supreme Court decision junking petitions opposing the burial of Ferdinand Marcos at the Cemetery of Heroes came swift from the victims and survivors of the late strongman’s Martial Law.

Hundreds gathered at the University of the Philippines on the night the decision was officially announced, vowing to continue their campaign to have Marcos remembered as a human rights violator. Read more
