Peace advocates hound AFP chief of staff Eduardo Año

Peace advocates and human rights defenders hounded Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Eduardo Año at the Ateneo de Manila University this morning, recalling his record of human rights violations.

Año delivered a lecture at the Jesuit university on protecting the people and the State, which the rally participants said is ironic as the general is at the forefront of implementing the Duterte government’s ongoing all-out war that victimizes civilian communities throughout the country.

Año had been charged with masterminding the abduction and enforced disappearance of activist Jonas Burgos, among other human rights violations. Read more

Ka Paris and son Carlos meet after 16 years in Rome

National Democratic Front of the Philippines peace consultant Alfredo Mapano was visited by his son Carlos in Rome, Italy during their third round of formal talks with the Government of the Republic of the Philippines last January.

Father and son last saw each other 16 years ago in an NPA camp in Northern Mindanao. Carlos was then a teenager finding out the truth about his father, the legendary Red commander “Ka Paris.” Read more

Women dance and rise to support peace talks resumption

Hundreds of women and their supporters held the 5th annual One Billion Rising event at Manila’s Liwasang Bonifacio on Valentine’s Day.

Through dances and speeks, they also called for a stop to the Duterte administration’s declaration of an all out war.

They also prodded the Duterte administration to return to the negotiation table with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

“President Duterte’s emotional rant abruptly terminating negotiations and the declaration of an all-out war has unleashed a monster of human rights violations, killings of activists and illegal arrests,” said Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Emmi De Jesus. Read more

Various sectors vow support for peace talks continuation

Various sectors converged at the Palma Hall of the University of the Philippines last February 10 to urge President Rodrigo Duterte to let formal peace negotiations between his government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines continue.

Bayan Muna Karlos Ysagani Zarate said it would be a waste to terminate the peace talks given the many gains achieved in the last three rounds of the negotiations.

Basic sectors, UP community, lawmakers urge resumption of peace talks

The University of the Philippines (U.P.) community led by Chancellor Michael Tan and Vice chancellor Nestor Castro welcomed representatives of basic sectors of workers, farmers, women and youth to call for the continuation of peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).

Rep. Carlos Zarate, joined by other members of the Makabayan bloc in Congress, announced that 103 lawmakers signed a House Resolution to continue the GRP-NDFP peace negotiations. T

Veteran activists commemorate 47th anniversary of First Quarter Storm

Bonifacio Ilagan, artist and activist, recalls the historic First Quarter Storm of 1970 that helped spark the struggle against the dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Last January 26, dozens of FQS activists gathered at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani to commemorate the days when youth and students battled against the dictatorship. Read more

Bayan, Makabayan hit tax reform and death penalty bills

In a rally in at the House of Representatives various sectors led by the BAYAN and the Makabayan Coalition called for the rejection of the bills that would restore the death penalty and another that imposes higher taxes on the people. Both bills are government-sponsored.

Evan Hernandez of the rights group Hustisya said that under a justice system that is flawed if not downright rotten, death penalty is not a deterrent to crimes nor will it render justice to the victims.

Like the death penalty, the tax reform only hits the the poor rather than the rich said Rep. Carlos Zarate of Bayan Muna. Zarate and other members of the Makabayan bloc vowed to oppose the bill and will instead push the Finance Dept. and the Bureau of Customs to efficiently work on their collection. (Video by Divine C. Black Friday protest vs impunity held at Camp Crame

A multi-sectoral rally was held at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame to protest the killings in the Duterte government’s “war on drugs,” citing the brazenness by which the crimes were committed, mostly among the urban poor residents.

Rights group Karapatan said Pres. Duterte is “partly to blame for this brutality as he condones the police actions done in the name of his ‘war on drugs.”

The protesters called on the government to instead focus its attention to ‘economic reforms that would address poverty and violence”, which are among the reasons why the drug problem persists. (Video by Divine C. Miranda) Read more
