Groups insist on government accountability for Yolanda Victims

On the third anniversary of Supertyphoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-National Capital Region held a symbolic candle-lighting ceremony for the victims and survivors of the disaster last November 8 in Quiapo, Manila.

Bayan-NCR chairperson Raymond Palatino said the Benigno Aquino administration should still be held accountable for what they say was its inefficient and unjust response to the disaster.

Officials of the current Rodrigo Duterte government have reported that while many of the victims and survivors have still to receive material and monetary aid, only P30 million of the Yolanda rehabilitation funds remain from hundreds of billions.

The protesters are also calling for continuing rehabilitation of areas and citizens in the affected areas. Read more

Scholasticans learn about Martial Law from victim

St. Scholastica’s College-Manila students learned about the atrocities of Ferdinand Marcos’s Martial Law from former political detainee and torture victim Bonifacio Ilagan in a forum last October 26.

Organized by Bulatlat.com as part of its education series, the forum was aimed at informing younger generations of the dangers of romanticizing the late strongman’s rule.

Visayas NDFP consultants sing ‘Dandansoy’ with Jalandoni

National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) consultants from the Visayas sing “Dandansoy” at the testimonial dinner for their recently-resigned chief negotiator Luis Jalandoni in Oslo, Norway last October 7.

Jalandoni served on the negotiating table for 24 years. He is now NDFP Negotiating Panel Senior Adviser. Read more

Pambansang Lakbayan ng mga Pambansang Minorya 2016 ends in defiance

The Lakbayan ng Pambansang Minorya 2016 closes at Mendiola in Manila after weeks of marches from as far as Northern Luzon and Southern Mindanao.

Indigenous peoples and Moros asserted their right to self-determination, peace and the pull-out of military troops from their communities. Despite being teargassed, caned and ran over by the police at a picket in front of the U.S. embassy, the minorities in their newly-formed national alliance Sandugo vowed to fight U.S. imperialism and support Pres. Duterte’s independent foreign policy.

Pia Macliing Malayao, lead convenor of Sandugo and one of those injured by the ramming of a police van, spoke on behalf of the 14 million indigenous peoples and national minorities oppressed in the Philippines.

She was later summoned to Malacanang Palace to air their demands. (Contributed video by ILPS)

Revolutionary peasants hold lightning rally

Hundreds of members of the revolutionary peasant group Pambansang Katipunan ng mga Magbubukid held a “lightning rally” from Morayta Avenue to Mendiola Bridge last October 20 to express support to the ongoing peace negotiations between the Rodrigo Duterte government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

The underground organization said the peace negotiations should address the age-old problem of unjust land ownership in the Philippines.

They also called for the immediate release of more than 400 political prisoners who they said are not criminals but workers for social justice in the country. Read more

Police brutality victim explains why national minorities are marching in Manila

Piya Macliing Malayao, SANDUGO spokesperson ang Katribu secretary general, speaks in a press conference a day after the brutal police dispersal in front of the United States Embassy last October 19.

Malayao, a third generation activist in her family who fights for national minorities’ self determination, was among at least 50 activists brutally dispersed by the Manila Police District of the Philippine National Police.

In the press conference, the victims said they are set to file criminal and administrative charges against police officers led by deputy MPD commander Marcelino Pedrozo. Read more

IPs march to Mendiola to press fight for self-determination

Indigenous peoples who are participating in the Pambansang Lakbayan ng Pambansang Minorya 2016 marched to Mendiola, Manila last October 20 to press their fight for self-determination.

The march was also in condemnation of the brutal dispersal of their rally in front of the United States Embassy the previous day.

The indigenous peoples formed a new national alliance called SANDUGO, which opposes US imperialism that they claim violates their collective and individual human rights. Read more

Peoples’ lawyers to file attempted murder charges vs MPD

National Union of People’s Lawyer chairperson Neri Colmenares explains why they intend to file attempted murder charges against Manila Police District officers who violently dispersed protesting indigenous peoples in front of the United States embassy in Manila last October 19.

In a press conference at the University of the Philippines a day after the incident, Colmenares explained there the police actions were unwarranted and with criminal intent. Read more
