Manilakbayan 2015: Bringing the Lumad’s voice to the doorsteps of oppressors

Hundreds of Lumad and Moro participants of the ongoing Manilakbayan staged a protest rally at the gates of Camp Aguinaldo, headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. They accuse the AFP of being blood-thirsty mercenaries who kill at the bidding of big mining and logging companies that plunder their ancestral domains. The Lumad performed dance rituals to symbolise their struggle against their “oppressors”.

Militants hold rally at SC vs EDCA

As the Philippine Supreme Court is about to release its ruling on the petition to declare the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement between the United States of America and Philippine government unconstitutional, petitioners belonging to the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan staged a rally in front of the Court to reiterate their opposition to foreign military presence in the country.

Lumad launch book on mining and plunder in Mindanao

The latest book on large-scale mining plunder in Mindanao, “Undermining Patrimony,” is launched with lumad representatives of Manilakbayan 2015. Sr. Francis Añover, national coordinator of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP), and Sr. Stella Matutina of Panalipdan introduced the book. IBP promises to act on Lumad complaints

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), through its president Atty Rosario Setias-Reyes, promised to act on the complaints presented by the Lumad leaders at their Manilakbayan campsite last November 3. Atty Reyes also called on President Benigno Aquino to stop the killings of indigenous peoples and to build peace instead.

The Lumad of Mindanao are currently encamped at Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila until November 22.

Desaparecidos including John Calaba, a Dulangan Manobo missing since April 30, 2015, and other human rights victims were remembered on All Soul’s Day Nov. 2 as the Manilakbayan 2015 camps out at the Liwasang Bonifacio. Connie Empeño, mother of abducted activist Karen, and other kin were joined by lumad leader Datu Jumong and veteran writer Boni Ilagan. They demand an end to counter-insurgency operations Oplan Bayanihan.

UP opens arms to Lumad Struggle

The Manilakbayan 2015 from Mindanao arrives at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman to press against state terror attacks on Lumad schools, communities and people. UP Chancellor Dr. Michael Tan and CONTEND Chair Prof. Gerry Lanuza receive the Lumads with open arms. Music provided by Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi) led by Prof. Edru Abraham. The campaign #StopLumadKillings is supported by the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP).

New group P1NAS launched to defend Philippine sovereignty

Political and civil society leaders launched the broad Pilipinong Nagkakaisa para sa Soberanya (P1NAS) at Miriam College last October 20, vowing to defend Philippine sovereignty against escalating Chines and US military activities in the West Philippine Sea.

The group revealed they plan to inform US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping of their opposition to their respective country’s military incursions into Philippine territory when they attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meet in November.
