Senior citizens hold rally vs Aquino’s veto of SSS pension increase

Thousands of senior citizens and Social Security System pensioners held a rally at Quezon Memorial Circle last January 30 to call for an override of the presidential veto of the P2,000 monthly pension increase.

They collectively condemned President Aquino as disrespectful of old people who rely on their pensions for their daily needs.

Filipino comfort women hold protest rally on Japanese Emperor’s visit

Filipino comfort women led a protest rally near Malacañan Palace on the occasion of Japanese Emperor Akihito’s ongoing visit to the Philippines. They also called on Philippine President Benigno Aquino to seek justice in their behalf.

Hundreds of young Filipinas were abducted by Japanese imperial forces during World War II and were forced to become sex slaves for the invading forces. Japan has never formally acknowledged the crime in the Philippines although it recently issued an official apology to the comfort women in Korea.

Aquino reportedly did not bring the matter up with the Emperor in their meeting yesterday.

Majority of the Filipina comfort women has since died and only a few are alive to carry on the fight for justice.

Bayan calls for Aquino’s prosecution for Mamasapano bloodbath

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and its allied organization called for the prosecution of President Benigno Aquino and former chief of police Alan Purisima for the many deaths in Mamasapano a year ago.

Bayan chairperson Carol Araullo said that while many facts are being covered up regarding the incident, it could never be denied that Aquino and Purisima are liable for the bloodbath.

President Aquino may only be charged after he steps down from office on July this year. The Philippine Senate is set on reopening its investigation on the Mamasapano incident very soon.

SSS pensioners: Increase important for our dignity

Senior citizens trooped to the House of Representatives a few days after President Benigno Aquino vetoed the bill for a two thousand peso increase in the monthly pension of member-retirees. They are asking Congress to override the veto by reenacting the measure through a two-thirds vote.

The pensioners said that the increase would have help them reclaim some of their dignity that has been affected by the small amounts they receive from the social security agency.

Progressives denounce SC decision on EDCA

Progressive organizations denounced the Supreme Court decision declaring the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) constitutional in a rally in front of the United States Embassy last January 14.

The protesters maintain that the US-Philippine EDCA violates Philippine sovereignty by giving basing rights to foreign military, more so that the Philippine Senate has disapproved of the “treaty”.

Petitioners against the EDCA are set to file a motion of reconsideration to the High Tribunal very soon.

Ka Bel’s 83rd remembered; 2016 bets dared

Workers and government officials commemorated late labor movement icon and progressive legislator Crispin “Ka Bel” Beltran’s 83rd birth anniversary at Plaza Miranda in Manila on January 7, 2016. ILPS Philippines Chair Elmer Labog led the ceremonies supported by the City of Manila represented by Ms. Flordeliza Villaseñor. In his speech, Labog challenged 2016 national and local elections candidates to emulate genuine and pro-people leadership that Beltran exemplified all his life.

Ka Bel served as chairperson of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) and of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS). He was KMU’s longest-serving leader and was cited as one of the country’s best legislators several times.

VIDEO: Northeastern Mindanao celebrates CPP 47th founding anniversary

Despite checkpoints by the Philippine Army and threats by a paramilitary group that it will kill attendees, thousands of members, supporters and invited guests attended the grand Communist Party of the Philippines 47th founding anniversary celebrations in Northeastern Mindanao last December 26.
