Progressives welcome Duterte decision to stop US-RP war games

Progressive groups led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) held a rally in front of the United States Embassy in Manila last October 4 to support President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to stop the joint US-Philippines military exercises and patrol over some portions of the South China Sea.

Duterte announced after his return from his recent Vietnam trip that he will no longer allow the joint exercises and patrol after the next one scheduled later this month. Read more

‘Never again to Martial Law’ survivors say

SURVIVORS of Martial Law marched to Mendiola last September 21 to press their demand for justice on the 44th anniversary of its declaration.

They were joined by recently-released National Democratic Front of the Philippines peace consultants who themselves were victims of the Marcos dictatorship.

The activists also reiterated their opposition to the burial of the late dictator at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Read more

One Billion Rising 2017 to focus on violence of poverty

One Billion Rising international coordinator Monique Wilson led the launch of the fifth year of its annual event with the theme “Solidarity against exploitation of women.”

Through dances and songs it has popularized since 2011, Wilson said their next celebration would focus on poverty and how it worsens the other injustices they suffer.

The One Billion Rising campaign again expects millions of women to gather on February 14 in countries all over the world.

As it commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Senate vote rejecting an extension of the US-Philippine Military Bases Treaty, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan expressed support for President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration that foreign soldiers must leave Mindanao.

Activists commemorate bases treaty rejection anniversary with protest at US Embassy

Commemorating the 1991 rejection of a U.S. bases treaty, militant mass organizations stormed the U.S. embassy in Manila on Sep. 16, 2016 to protest the continued presence of American troops under the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).

They expressed support to Pres. Duterte’s pursuit of an independent foreign policy, which Makabayan President Satur Ocampo said “echoes the Bandung Conference against the imperialist countries.” Read more

NDFP consultants come home to UP

NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC FRONT OF THE pHILIPPINES (NDFP) peace consultants Benito Tiamzon, Wilma Austria Tiamzon, Jaime Soledad, Rey Claro Casambre, Rafael Baylosis, visited the University of the Philippines in Diliman Quezon City for the first time since their release from prison or going above-ground last September 15.

The group was welcomed by UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan and vice-chancellor Nestor Castro at the iconic Oblation and were given the sablay. Read more

Ang Libing, a skit on the planned burial of Marcos at the ‘heroes’ cemetery

Karatula, originally the cultural group of Kabataang Makabayan (KM), performs the short skit “Ang Libing” by Bonifacio P. Ilagan at forums and protest actions.

A celebrated playwright, Ilagan was one of the earliest members of KM. He was arrested and tortured during Marcos’s Martial Law. His sister Rizalina was abducted by Marcos’s troops in the 1970s and remains missing to this day.

Ilagan is a convener of the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses in Malacanang (CARMMA). Read more

THE Tiamzons, Benito and Wilma, explain the revolutionary struggle and the struggle for reforms . They also clarified the interim nature of the indefinite ceasefire mutually and unilaterally declared by the GRP and the NDFP and the possibility of forging a bilateral ceasefire as both parties negotiate on the substantial agenda of the peace talks.
