KMP: Cha-cha is only for the benefit of hacienderos not for Filipino people

The militant peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas held a 3 day vigil in front of the House of Representativesa from June 8 to June 10, to condemn the so-called economic Charter Change. They said that the economic Cha-cha was being pushed by the Aquino administration-controlled Congress is only for the benefit of the hacienderos like President Aquino whose family still controls the sprawling Hacienda Luisita sugar estate in Tarlac.

The KMP also said that “economic Charter Change will intensify land-grabbing in the countryside and worsen the export-oriented and import dependent orientation of the economy. Local production that is dependent on imported inputs will be directed to serving the needs of globalization.”

Former Senator Leticia Shahani explains why it is important to create P1NAS – Pilipinong Nagkakaisa para sa Soberanya (People’s Unity for National Sovereignty) which was launched last June 8 at the National Press Club.

P1NAS will lead a huge rally in front of the Chinese Consulate in Makati City on Friday, June 12, Philippine Independence Day, at nine o’clock in the morning to protest Beijing’s incursions into Philippine territory. The rally will proceed to the US Embassy in Manila at about eleven o’clock, this time to protest the possible return of its military bases in the Philippines.

Organizations and personalities launch alliance for sovereignty

In light of Chinese incursions into Philippine territory and proposals from the Aquino government that US military bases should again be allowed in the Philippines, various organizations and personalities formed and launched an alliance to defend Philippine sovereignty at the National Press Club this morning.

This video shows Bayan Muna representative Neri Colmenares explaining the basis and objectives of P1NAS – Pilipinong Nagkakaisa para sa Soberanya (People’s Unity for National Sovereignty).

He is joined by former Senators Rene Saguisag, Leticia Ramos Shahani, and Victor Ziga. Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Law Dean Ernesto Maceda Jr represented his father, former Senator Ernesto Maceda who, like Senators Saguisag and Ziga were part of the so-called Magnificent 12 who voted against the extension of the US Military Bases Agreement in 1991.

Organizations present in the launch included Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, Kilusang Mayo Uno, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, Pamalakaya, Migrante International, the National Union of Students of the Philippines, the College Editors’ Guild of the Philippines, the Student Christian Movement of the Philippines, and others.

Artists Bibeth Orteza, Mae Panel, and Heber Bartolome were also present.

Protest vs China’s incursions

Asserting the people’s independent foreign policy, mass organizations from the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) and the Philippines chapter of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS-Phils) marched towards the Chinese embassy and held a picket to protest China’s incursions into the West Philippine Sea and US imperialist transgressions on Philippine sovereignty. Among the speakers were Renato Reyes of BAYAN and Elmer Labog of the ILPS-Phils.

Militant groups demand justice

After the biggest loss of lives in a factory fire and continuing violent dispersal of worker’s striker’s, militant organizations led by Kilusang Mayo Uno and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan trooped to the Department of Labor and Employment last May 27 to denounce its inability to protect workers.

Community decries violent demolition

Residents of Barangay Calaanan, Caloocan City decried the violent demolition of their homes yesterday and condemned Rep. Egay Erice and the local government unit for unleashing armed police commandos against their community.

Spokespersons of the local Anakpawis chapter reveal that they still have appeals pending before higher courts at the time of the demolition. They said they have not been properly consulted by the local government and they were not informed of any relocation site before the demolition team swooped on their community.

The Philippines chapter of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS-Phils) supports the movement along with various sectors, cause-oriented groups and institutions.
