OPINION: Stop the peace saboteurs!

THEY are killing farmers again.

Just a few days after the killing of four farmers in Fort Magsaysay, Laur, Nueva Ecija on September 3, peasant leader Ariel Diaz was gunned down last Thursday, September 7 in Villa Pereda, Delfin Albano, Isabela.

These incidents occurred at a time when the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philuippines peace talks resumed with renewed commitment and vigor. Topping the agenda are fundamental socio-economic reforms including genuine land reform directly affecting 75 million Filipinos out of the present population of about 100 million.

CONTRIBUTED VIDEO: Global activists protest lumad killing in Davao

Coming from international solidarity missions, global activists join BAYAN-Southern Mindanao Region in a picket at the regional office of the Commission on Human Rights in Davao City to protest the killing of Hermie Alegre, chairperson of the Parents- Teachers Association of the Salugpungan Lumad school, and wounding of Bagobo tribal chieftain Datu Danny Diarog. The lumad leaders were attacked on July 15, 2016 while on their way home from a meeting with the National Commission on Indigenous People. The JustPeacePH platform mobilizes at the International Conference for People’s Rights in the Philippines (ICPRP) held in Davao City on July 24-25, 2016. It supports the resumption of peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), release of all political prisoners, dismantling of para-military groups and an end to militarization.

Workers support peace talks

Workers led by the Kilusang Mayo Uno (May First Movement) trooped to Mendiola, Manila on June 24, 2016 to support the peace talks between the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) and the government under President-elect Rodrigo Duterte. They called for the release of all political prisoners.

Appointed DAR secretary Mariano sings for land distribution

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s appointed Department of Agrarian Reform secretary Rafael “Ka Paeng” Mariano sings Asin’s “Gising na Kaibigan” at the 15th anniversary celebration of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS)-Philippines Chapter.

ITANONG MO KAY PROF: On the Kidapawan violence

In this podcast, International League of Peoples’ Struggles chairperson Jose Maria Sison presents his analysis on the violent dispersal of the starving farmers in Kidapawan City last April 1.

Sison said that the farmers should not be blamed for protesting. Blame should be placed on government officials who did not help the farmers but instead ordered the violent dispersal, Sison said.

Sison also expressed admiration for the artists who helped the farmers by giving them rice and raising bail money for the arrested farmers.

Public sector workers protest over pay hike

Declaring a “Black Heart’s Day,” public sector workers trooped to Mendiola leading to Malacanang Palace in Manila to denounce Pres. Benigno Aquino III and Budget Sec. Florencio Abad for the Salary Standardization Law 4 (SSL 4) discriminating pay and benefits for the country’s 1.5 million government workers. Similar actions were held in Baguio, Angeles, Naga, Legazpi, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and other cities in the Philippines.
