Isabela farmers oppose large scale mining at Cordon town

Farmers from Isabela Province trooped to the national offices of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Quezon City last week to oppose large scale mining operations in Cordon town. They say their rice fields are in danger of being swamped by loose earth and poisonous mine tailings from the mining sites.

Isabela is the Philippines’ second biggest rice producer.

LARAWAN: Kalbaryo ng Maralitang Taga-lunsod 2015

Plaza Miranda, Manila
March 30, 2015

Marking the first day of the Holly week, Anakpawis together with urban poor group Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (KADAMAY) today staged their own progressive version of the passion of the Christ. It cited six major issues of the people in which President Noynoy Aquino failed to address — landlessness, low wage, demolition of urban poor, massive conversion of local fishing grounds, the continuing neglect of Yolanda survivors, unabated skyrocketing of prices and basic utilities.

Mendiola, Manila

AQUINO, RESIGN!

Press Statement
February 4, 2015

We, party list representatives from the Makabayan bloc, add our voices to the mounting call for Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III to resign.

Aquino must resign! The President must resign for the sake of the nation, to save our nation from further disasters, moral bankruptcy, and massive poverty.

President Aquino is unfit to rule and has betrayed public trust. This is evident in the bloody Mamasapano fiasco and the unconstitutional Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) as affirmed by the most recent Supreme Court decision.

Aquino lost his moral ascendancy and legitimacy to govern when he lied to the people on his responsibility and accountability in the botched police operation that led to the deaths of 44 police, 18 Moro fighters and 8 civilians. He covers up the role of United States and the unlawful participation of suspended PNP Chief General Allan Purisima. He broke the chain of command and violated the required coordination in the peace agreements with the MILF. The blood of the fallen SAF 44 and 26 Moros are on his hands.

Aquino refuses to admit that he kowtowed to US’ instigation in the “Oplan Wolverine”, gave the go- signal to the highly dangerous police operation in Mamasapano without coordinating with the MILF, and sanctioned the illegal involvement of US military forces and suspended PNP Chief General Allan Purisima.

Aquino’s hand in the unconstitutional DAP was affirmed with the final ruling of the Supreme Court. He and Abad authored DAP and used billions of people’s money as “pork barrel” — to bribe senator-judges to impeach Corona, provide compensation for landlords including his family, fund his pet projects, and give patronage to favored politicians. With DAP, Aquino took away precious funds intended for social services for the people and the benefits of government employees.

Under Aquino’s administration, poverty has worsened, “pork barrel” funds became bigger, gross violations of human rights continued, the country became a big US military base, and calamities became disasters.

We must not wait for another transgression or disaster to happen. Give the nation a break, a chance for renewal. Aquino, resign! ###

Farmers decry lack of justice 28 years after Mendiola massacre

Peasants held an indignation rally at Mendiola to commemorate the massacre that killed 13 and injured many others on January 22, 1987.

In this video, peasant leader and massacre survivor Rafael Mariano recalls how the massacre happened.

It is notable that Corazon Aquino, the late mother of President Benigno Aquino III, was the head of state during the incident. Many participants and survivors of the massacre were peasants calling for the distribution of the Cojuanco-Aquino controlled Hacienda Luisita.

“Stand with us,” People’s Organizations Implore “People’s Pope”

On the last day of Pope Francis’ pastoral visit to the Philippines people’s organizations joined millions of Filipinos at the University of Santo Tomas and Rizal Park to ask for his continued solidarity in their fight for social justice. The organizations expressed joy at the Pontiff’s stand against corruption and “glaring…scandalous social inequality,” as well as justice for the poor.

Workers, peasants, women, urban poor, indigenous peoples, migrant Filipinos, transport workers, and many others marched from Liwasang Bonifacio to Rizal Park with images of saints, displayed placards and distributed leaflets to highlight what they believe are the Pope’s pro-people messages.
