Morong 43 starts fasting in protest of transfer delay; Groups condemn rights violations by AFP

In protest of the delay in their transfer to a civillian facility, the detained health workers at Camp Capinpin started fasting last April 13, 2010. The fasting was supported by a protest march held in Manila on April 14 by peoples organizations whose leaders and members had been assassinated or abducted by elements widely believed to be members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Rights Commission's second hearing on the 43 health workers

The CHR's second hearing on charges of human rights violations committed by the AFP and PNP against the 43 health workers. Again, the AFP refused to present the victims. Again, the AFP and PNP's lies were exposed.

Dr Melicia Velmonte and son Jose Manuel revealed how the raiding party violated procedures and disrespecting the law they swore to uphold.

And during the hearing, police operatives harassed the victims' families by taking their pictures.  read more »

The human rights group Karapatan strongly denounces the scripted show that the military of the 2nd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police have concocted and executed in the supposed “transfer” of the Morong 43 political detainees from Camp Capinpin to the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

The illegal arrest and continued detention of the “Morong 43” in a military facility represent serious threat to the civil liberties of the Filipino people. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) follows with grave concern the shifting accusations of the military against the health workers, the conflicting positions of government authorities on the legitimacy of the arrest and detention, and the seeming lack of regard of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for human rights and the rule of law.

Bishops boost morale of Morong 43 in visit to Camp Capinpin

Bishops from the United Churches of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) and community members trooped to Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal last March 31, 2010 to show their support for the release of the 43 illegally arrested health workers, also known as the Morong 43. They were accompanied by relatives of the detained health workers, some of which are also UCCP members.

The search for justice for Beng Hernandez and other victims of OBL continues

Today marks the eighth year death anniversary of my daughter Benjaline “Beng” Hernandez.  Beng was a former student journalist who chose to work for the marginalized as a human rights defender. Together with other human rights workers Vivian Andrade and Crisanto Amora, Beng was killed by CAFGU and military elements belonging to the 12th Special Forces Company.
